The golden Big Buddha statue at the top of the staircase at Wat Phra Yai, Koh Samui

Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai)

The golden landmark of the north-east coast

The Big Buddha — properly Wat Phra Yai — is a 12-metre gold-painted statue of the seated Buddha on Koh Faan, a rocky islet joined to the north-east corner of Samui by a short causeway. It was built in 1972 and has been the island’s emblem ever since; arriving passengers often spot it from the plane.

A staircase flanked by naga serpents leads up to the platform at the statue’s base, where there are bells to ring and wide views over Bang Rak beach, the piers and Koh Phangan. Around the courtyard below are shrines, smaller statues, souvenir stalls and cafés.

Top things to do at Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai)

Climb to the statue

Shoes come off at the foot of the stairs, and the stone gets hot in the middle of the day — early morning or late afternoon is more comfortable, and the light is better for photographs.

Combine it with Wat Plai Laem

The colourful lake temple of Wat Plai Laem is only a few minutes’ drive away, and the two are almost always visited together.

Stay for sunset

The causeway and the beach bars of Bang Rak face west along the coast, and the statue is lit after dark.

Insider tips

  • Do not climb on statues or pose with your back turned close to the Buddha — it is considered disrespectful.
