Chaweng Beach

Samui’s longest, liveliest beach

Chaweng is the beach that made Koh Samui famous: several kilometres of pale, fine sand along the east coast, shelving gently into a bay protected by a reef. It is also the island’s commercial heart, with the largest choice of hotels, restaurants, shopping and bars, and it is only about ten to fifteen minutes from the airport.

The beach falls into three parts. The north is shallow and quieter, the centre is the busiest stretch with beach clubs and the nightlife streets directly behind it, and Chaweng Noi, round the headland to the south, is a smaller, calmer bay with a handful of larger resorts. If Chaweng sounds too busy, compare the other beaches in our where to stay guide.

Top things to do at Chaweng Beach

Spend a day on the sand

The beach is public along its whole length, although access lanes between the hotels can be hard to spot. Sunbeds usually belong to hotels or beach bars and are free or cheap if you order food and drink. Vendors and jet-ski operators work the central section; walk north or south for more peace.

See a Muay Thai fight night

Chaweng has the island’s main boxing stadiums, with fight cards on several evenings a week. You can buy a ticket in advance or at the door; ringside seats cost more than the stands.

Go out after dark

Samui’s nightlife is concentrated in central Chaweng, around Soi Green Mango and the beach road, with everything from beach clubs and cabaret shows to late clubs. Keep an eye on your drink, agree taxi fares before getting in and do not ride a scooter home after drinking.

How to get to Chaweng Beach

  • From the airport: Chaweng is the closest major beach to Samui Airport, roughly 10–15 minutes by taxi or pre-booked transfer.
  • From elsewhere on the island: songthaews run along the ring road and the Chaweng beach road during the day; after dark they operate as private taxis. See getting around.

Insider tips

  • The sea is usually calm from about February to September; during the rainy months, waves and currents can be strong — respect red flags.
  • Traffic on the one-way beach road crawls in the evening; it is often quicker to walk.
  • For a quieter stay with Chaweng still close by, look at Chaweng Noi or Choeng Mon.

Chaweng Beach FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is Chaweng Beach good for swimming?

For most of the year, yes — the sand shelves gently and the offshore reef keeps the water calm. At low tide the northern end becomes very shallow, and in the rainy season (roughly October to December) the surf can be rough.

Is Chaweng suitable for families?

It can be: the beach is excellent and there are plenty of family hotels. If you want quiet evenings, choose the northern end or Chaweng Noi rather than the central nightlife area.
